Self Care in Between Sessions - For Therapists

There is something about meeting with clients; absorbing all the pain, sadness, and grief that the client is experiencing is not easy.

Taking a break and searching for ways to restart is essential for therapists.

My clinical residency experience with my clients taught me these four concepts:

Being the Tool vs. Using the Tool

At the center of our work is our commitment to our clients, but also our commitment to our well-being. That is why we must be mindful of our emotional, mental, and physical health. We must practice self-care and recognize our boundaries to be there for our clients in the best way possible. My thoughts often turn to nurses and doctors who have the tools to heal a patient, whereas we, as therapists, are the tools for our patients. We must constantly remind ourselves to keep a healthy boundary between ourselves and our clients. We can provide support and guidance, but we must remember that it is not our job to take their pain on ourselves.

Airplane mode switched ON

Airplane Mode is not only beneficial for airplanes but can also be used to conserve battery life. Yes, we are saving our battery life. We can accomplish only so many things in a day, and we must pay attention to what our body is communicating to us. Get into airplane mode and escape distractions. Take breaks throughout the day, listen to your body, and don't be afraid to take some time for yourself. It's important to recognize when you are feeling overwhelmed and to take a step back to re-center and recharge. Even Jesus switched into airplane mode when he went to a desolate place to pray to his Father (Mark 1:35).

Retreat and Re-enter

Meditation will help us to disconnect from the clamor of the world. Taking the time to reconnect with ourselves is essential. Find what works for you. Walk outside, listen to music, read a book, call a friend, or sit silently for five minutes. Allowing ourselves to be still for a few moments can positively impact our minds and body. Re-entering the world with a clear and refreshed head can help us handle the situation more clearly and clearly.

Hydrate. Eat. Repeat

Studies have demonstrated that hydration helps to improve cognitive function, including attention, memory, and processing speed (plos one). Eating nutritious food high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can also provide essential nutrients for optimal brain performance (mdpi). Additionally, eating healthy foods helps to maintain energy levels for long-term productivity. Finding a way to nourish our bodies with nutritious foods that fit our busy schedules is essential to maintain a healthy balance. Small changes such as having healthy snacks on hand, packing a nutritious lunch to bring to work, or pre-cooking meals for the week can help us make healthier choices.

Self-care practices should be prioritized and integral to our daily lives. However, taking time out for self-care should be an investment in our overall health and well-being. Maintaining balance and effectively addressing our work and personal commitments is essential. Self-care is not a luxury but necessary to ensure we can continue living healthy, productive lives. However, it is important to remember that self-care is not an indulgence but an essential part of our well-being. We should make it a habit to take the time to step away from our everyday lives to focus on ourselves. Taking moments to rest, recharge, and reconnect with ourselves is essential for our mental and physical well-being. Taking the time to practice self-care can help us to be more productive and efficient in our lives.

Hanns Nacua, Clinical Resident

I am passionate about helping my clients find the courage to explore the depths of their story and transition toward a place of acceptance, healing, and growth. I believe there is beauty in brokenness if we are willing to explore it. It is through this process we often discover newfound strength and resilience, a deeper understanding of ourselves and our relationships. By embracing our brokenness, we can come to appreciate the beauty and power found within. With a non-judgmental and compassionate approach, I work with my clients to uncover the patterns that are holding them back from the life they want to live.
